Big Day Boston 2024 was a blast! Thank you, Adam, for coming up with the concept and organizing the event. I was super excited to participate this year, after missing out on the inaugural event in 2023 due to scheduling conflicts. What I loved about BDB was seeing the cross section of the birding community who participated…BDB had kids to seniors, families, photographers, and I’m sure a whole range of beginner to highly experienced birders. There were lots of smiles at the finish line and I think everyone had a great time!

We saw 27 species, walked 9 miles, and got unreasonably excited about seeing crows together. It was a great event and we had tons of fun!

Mass Young Birders Club | Big Day Boston 2023 report

The Massachusetts Young Birders Club had a great day exploring the Esplanade and identifying the different birds enjoying the space. We started our day watching Double Crested Cormorants drying their wings on boat buoys and were amazing at how unphased they were by human efforts to keep them away from boats - like long shiny streamers. We were also so delighted with the up close view of the cormorants' bright blue eyes and their jagged, teeth like bills - perfect for catching fish!

Good day, glad I participated! In retrospect my strategy to cover as much ground as possible was a bad one, I ended up with 26k steps and 24 species. I got three species after "giving up" on my itinerary and going to lovejoy wharf for a beer: a red-tailed halk, a mockingbird and a LOON!

PS | Big Day Boston 2023 report

It was a beautiful blue-sky day—perfect to get out in Boston, explore a new neighborhood (Charlestown) and look for birds. We met some other birders who immediately became friends, as we sought out birds along the harbor and in city parks. It’s surprising how many birds are in the small city parks and landscaped areas around the neighborhoods (many house sparrows and robins!!!) but we did spot 16 different birds. We were a team of three gals out enjoying a fun day in Boston) Thanks to the organizer and would like this to be an annual event on Big Day Boston!

A fantastic way to spend a day in the city! We walked all around town (6.11 miles!) and identified 15 species of birds. I really wanted to see the Custom House peregrine falcon, but no luck. The real highlight was a bit of a mystery. I’m fairly certain it was a common loon, even though that feels like a big improbability. It was off the Harborwalk, low in the water with a puffy white breast, white dappled black back, and a long neck tightly nestled against its body. The only thing that didn’t seem loon-ish was it didn’t seem like the beak was pointed enough.  đź¤·đźŹ»â€Ťâ™‚️

We had a great time today - thanks so much to the organizers!  We spotted 30 different types of birds and walked 8 miles.  (Also saw a baby bunny!) Hoping this becomes an annual event!

Check out the tail on this gorgeous juvenile Red-tailed Hawk.  One of the highlights so far from my Big Day Boston travels.
