Mass Young Birders Club | Big Day Boston 2023 report

By Mass Young Bir…, 8 May, 2023

The Massachusetts Young Birders Club had a great day exploring the Esplanade and identifying the different birds enjoying the space. We started our day watching Double Crested Cormorants drying their wings on boat buoys and were amazing at how unphased they were by human efforts to keep them away from boats - like long shiny streamers. We were also so delighted with the up close view of the cormorants' bright blue eyes and their jagged, teeth like bills - perfect for catching fish! After spending time at the sailing docks, we headed towards Teddy Ebersol Fields and were loving how close we could to the different birds foraging on the ground without spooking them. We passed many Robins, Starlings and House sparrows picking for seeds and insects along the greenway as well as two domestic geese! Because of how used to people these birds are, we were able to get really great looks at their unique features and distinguish between male, female and even juvenile robins! As we walked along the greens, we heard goldfinches, grackles, red-winged blackbirds and one lone chipping sparrow. It was a wonderful day of seeing which bird species were present along the Esplanade. As we were wrapping up our walk, we stumbled across a goose and her goslings laying out in the Saturday sun!
