Competition boundaries

Birders Participanting in Big Day Boston 2023 can only count species they observe while within the boundaries of the competition. Birds may be observed and counted outside of the boundary as long as the observer is within the boundary. For example, water birds in the harbor may be counted from a wharf in the North End.

The following neighborhoods are within the boundaries of the competition:
  • Beacon Hill
  • Charlestown
  • Chinatown
  • Downtown
  • Downtown Waterfront
  • The Leather District
  • The North End
  • The West End

This includes the Common and the Public Garden. All other locations - inside and outside of Boston - are out of bounds.

Definitions

We recognize that many people have many different opinions on where the boundaries of Boston Neighborhoods start and stop. To avoid confusion, we use the boundaries as defined by the Boston Planning and Development Agency (BPDA) and published to Analyze Boston as the Boston Neighborhoods dataset. The GeoJSON published by the BPDA was used to generate the following map.
